roman coin

January 2023

This Roman coin, dated from the year 322, was produced during the consulate of Emperor Constantine II in the city of Aquileia. According to João Matos, Master in Ancient History from the University of Évora, “representations linked to agriculture had their place in Roman monetary iconography from early on, whether for economic, social or religious reasons. The ears of wheat were often depicted on coins produced in the Algarve and Alentejo in the 1st century BC and this coin of the 4th century AD shows a representation of a laurel wreath, sacred to the Romans. Although the Roman economy cannot be interpreted as the contemporary one, being that what could be bought with a coin could vary between provinces, a record of 320 AD from the city of Antioch (Turkey) states that for two coins like this one a loaf of bread could be bought.”
