A photographic exhibition of the work of Júlio Pereira on broa (a dense type of bread) from Avintes, portraying each step in the artisan manufacture of one of Portugal’s most traditional breads. It is one of the most appreciated delicacies of Portuguese cuisine and probably Portugal’s most famous type of bread. During the 18th century, grain milling was the main occupation in Avintes and was done on the mills along the River Febros. During the French invasions of 1809, while other places saw their means of production devastated by the foreign troops, Avintes was protected so that the “broa”, a staple for the people, could continue in production.
