BREAD FOR GOD – RECOVERING TRADITION

29th, 30th, 31st of October, and the 1st of November

The habit of “Bread for God” appeared in Portugal in the 15th century, but gained strength after the earthquake of 1755, in Lisbon, precisely on 1st November. The city was ravaged by hunger, which reinforced, among the habitants, the need to share food with those who needed it most. Thus, the needy traveled the streets of the capital asking for “Bread for God”.

Tradition dictates that children go out on the streets on November 1st to ask for “Bread for God” door to door, reciting verses or songs, and in exchange, they receive bread, cakes, or dried fruit.

To keep the tradition, the Bread Museum celebrates this day with a game and a special prize for the little ones.
